In this workshop, oracle and tarot publisher Stacey Williams-Ng will discuss the standard tarot archetypes—the Devil, the Empress, and yes, the Court cards—and tie them in with far older archetypal models from Western thought. Since Plato, we have collectively tried to pin down the roles that all human beings must somehow fit into, yet the figures remain shadowy. If we all agree that the world is pressing forward into a new paradigm, how can we build new archetypes to strive towards? (And should we even try?)

  • Take aways: After years of working on divination systems, and squeezing my brain very hard to make systems that would work for people, I ultimately managed to tap into my own ancestral folklore to "make a world" that my readers could make use of. I did so without relying too hard on the Golden Dawn, Aleister Crowley or anyone else in our field: instead, I looked to my community's own traditions and ideas. I would like people to walk away from this sesh feeling similarly challenged. Why must we put a couple of notable 19th century authors on a pedestal, when we have SO many new voices in the world? New divination scholars—many of whom might even be in this audience!— can offer us divination systems with life lessons that *are not* based on European political systems of royalty, patriarchy, and colonialism, because those ideas are—well, quite distasteful. So how can we democratize cartomancy? Important: I will not just be promoting my decks here. I want to lift up many great examples of modern tarot artists.
