The mystical properties of gemstones and jewels have their distant origins in the ancient lapidaries; books of mineralogical lore which we now clearly recognize as magical. During the medieval and Renaissance eras, these writings flew under the radar of authorities who would burn texts they deemed sorcerous. The majority of these texts emphasize the medical usage of gemstones in an era where healing was risky; but others were used to protect against curses, draw money, attract love, endow courage, and even make the bearer virtually immortal. This lore was later integrated into astrological magic, as every stone corresponded to at least one star or planet.
